ASBEST: Travel Light with Bitcoin

The ASBEST protocol (AVB’s Secure Bitcoin Encryption Scheme for Travelers) lets you move your crypto across borders without carrying hardware wallets or raw seed phrases, reducing risk during transit.

The Process

  1. Generate a Seed Create a 12- or 24-word seed phrase and add an optional passphrase. Use physical tools for maximum entropy:
    • 1deck (playing cards) → https://allesvoorbitcoin.be/21tools/1deck/
    • R4000 → https://allesvoorbitcoin.be/21tools/R4000/
    • Dice → https://allesvoorbitcoin.be/dice/

  2. Encrypt the Seed Encrypt the raw seed with AES using Argon2 key derivation. Choose one of these tools:
The result is the encrypted file you will carry.

  3. Create a Time-Lock Use the Timevault tool → https://allesvoorbitcoin.be/21tools/timevault/ Lock the AES-encrypted seed for the exact duration of your trip plus a few extra days.

  4. Distribute the Pieces
    • Friend 1 receives the time-locked version (completely unusable until the timer expires).
    • Friend 2 receives the AES decryption password and your seed passphrase.
    • You carry only the AES-encrypted seed (discreetly on paper, in a book, or hidden anywhere).

  5. Restore at Destination Once you arrive, ask Friend 2 for the decryption password and passphrase, decrypt the seed, and restore your wallet normally. If you lose your copy, your friends can still recover the funds after the time-lock ends.

Why This Works

  • No one — not you, not either friend — can access your Bitcoin alone.
  • The time-lock forces collaboration and prevents premature use.
  • You travel with nothing “raw” or obviously valuable.
  • Emergency recovery is built in without trusting any single person completely.

That’s the complete ASBEST method: simple, tool-supported, and effective for safe international crypto travel.
